About Our Club

Just-Judo was formed by Tony Penfold, David Somerville and Billy Cusack who first met while they were themselves competitors.  Each have represented Great Britain and Scotland at the highest levels, with one or another having been involved in European, World, Olympic and Commonwealth Championships since 1990 until the present day.

Tony and David still lead the club today whilst also deeply involved in the wider worlds of judo and sport in Scotland. Joined by a team of motivated and enthusiastic coaches and club officials they strive to deliver the sport in a fun, challenging, educational and safe environment where personal goals are sought out to ensure we are all 'better than yesterday!' Our team includes:

  • David Somerville - Former Scottish High Performance Head Coach, Olympian (Sydney 2000), 2014 Commonwealth Games Coach of the Year & Performance Coach of the Year, 6th Dan,
  • Tony Penfold - UKCC Level 3 coach, 5th Dan, former British International, JudoScotland Business Delivery Manager, former Midlothian Coach of the Year
  • Jimmy Purves - British Judo Level 3 Coach, 5th Dan and the club’s technical lead

  • Jack Smith - UKCC Level 1 coach
  • Demi Moffat - UKCC Level 1 coach, 1st Dan

Just-Judo was formed in 2001 and operates in a satellite structure with cluster clubs throughout Edinburgh and Midlothian, supported by a development pathway leading to the National programme offered by JudoScotland.

Our coaches value the development of the individual above all else, and through the many opportunities available at the club encourage members to gain experiences that will last a lifetime.

Your first session at the club is free, so why not pop along and join in Scotland's most successful Commonwealth Games sport.
